Minnetrista covers several beautiful and environmentally sensitive bays on the western edge of Lake Minnetonka. As development increases, it’s crucial to protect these waterways from harmful proposals and ensure that the city isn’t drawn into managing lakeshore issues beyond its responsibility.
Bays in Minnetrista
- Halsted’s Bay (shared with Mound) — a deep, scenic bay fed by Six Mile Creek, relatively undeveloped and critical habitat.
- West Upper Lake — continues beyond into Minnetrista’s shoreline.
- Priest’s Bay (shared with Mound) — a smaller adjoining bay.
Why Minnetrista Should Be Wary of LID Proposals
- Outside Jurisdiction – Lake management falls under the DNR and LMCD. Minnetrista shouldn’t allocate city resources to manage lakes or approve LIDs.
- Risk to Homeowners – LIDs force mandatory taxes and shift legal liability to lakeshore owners and the city.
- Environmental Responsibility – Herbicide-based treatments degrade water quality, damage fish habitat, and threaten long-term lake health in these vital bays.

What We Stand Against
While some bays already have active LIDs, there’s growing pressure to expand them. This would cement chemical treatments, tax increases, and liability shifts. Minnetrista deserves open planning, transparent public input, and science-based lake management – not a new taxing authority.
Stay Involved
- Contact your council members – let them know you oppose LIDs.
- Watch or attend council meetings to follow local decisions.
- Speak up for better solutions – mechanical weed control, watershed projects, and community-driven stewardship.
Lake Minnetonka belongs to all of us – let’s protect its western shores with care, not chemical shortcuts.
